Why requirements management matters
For small projects with a single team and a short timeline, a Word document may be enough. The moment your project grows past one team, one supplier, one regulator, or one product line, that approach breaks down β and the cost of breaking down is much larger than the cost of preventing it.
Three things consistently go wrong without proper requirements management:
Drift. Different copies of the same requirement live in different documents and slowly diverge. Decisions get made against stale versions. Bugs ship because the code matched a requirement that the testers had already updated, but nobody told the developers.
Loss of context. A requirement says "the system shall recharge in under 4 hours." Why 4 hours? Who said so? What does it depend on? Without a structured tool, the answer lives in someone's email or memory β and disappears the moment that person leaves.
